Sharp spike in Limpopo’s Covid-19 numbers

The Health MEC has expressed concern at the rapid rate at which the latest cases were recorded.

LIMPOPO – Limpopo Health MEC, Dr Phophi Ramathuba has noted with concern the rapid increase of Covid-19 cases in the province after eight new cases were recorded in a 24-hour period.

Ramathuba in a statement attributed the increase to inter-provincial movement during the transition from lockdown level five to level four, as well as the resumption of operations at mines in and around Sekhukhune and the Waterberg district.

“Limpopo recorded its first Covid-19 case on 16 March and since then we have always seen at most, a maximum increase of two cases within 24 hours. It is for the first time that we recorded an increase of eight cases.”

She added that to date, 54 cases have been recorded cumulatively, with 30 recoveries. A total of 21 cases remain active and in isolation with one patient, a 66-year-old man, currently admitted to an intensive care unit.

Ramathuba said this patient was diagnosed and admitted at a facility in Gauteng and his daughter fetched him. “He experienced severe respiratory distress and was discovered by our tracer teams while at his home. He is a known patient in Gauteng, and he has co-morbidities. We wish him a speedy recovery.”

The MEC urged residents to continue to observe the rules and regulations as mandated by the government.

“Wash your hands with soap or use an alcohol-based sanitiser, observe social distancing, wear cloth masks in public and stay at home. By so doing, will can avoid the spread of this virus.”
