30 incidents of vandalism at Limpopo schools

Education MEC, Polly Boshielo said it is sad to note that Limpopo has not been spared the wrath of criminals who have taken advantage of the nationwide lockdown.

LIMPOPO – National School Nutrition Programme food supplies and laptops top the list of stolen items at schools vandalised in the province, according to the Department of Education.

According to a statement released by Departmental Spokesperson, Tidimalo Chuene, the department recorded 30 incidents of school vandalism across six education districts in the past few days.

“Other stolen items include a refrigerator, digital camera, television set and desktop computers. Two schools have also reported vandalism to staff rooms and another had their water taps stolen,” the statement reads.

Education MEC, Polly Boshielo said it is sad to note that Limpopo has not been spared the wrath of criminals who have taken advantage of the nationwide lockdown.

“The sad reality is that our children who must contend with missing out on learning for more than a month, now also face another hardship of their food and learning tools stolen”, she said.

Capricorn South, Mopani West, Sekhukhune South, Vhembe East, Vhembe West and Waterberg are the affected districts and Chuene added that all the cases have been reported to the South African Police Service.

Chuene said the department is collaborating with various law enforcement agencies to curb the incidents before they spread to other parts of the province.

“We strongly condemn these acts and plead with our communities to help in apprehending these criminals by promptly reporting any suspicious activities around schools and cooperating with the police during investigations. Our people should also not fall victim to buying stolen goods as that is a criminal offense,” said Boshielo.
