Elisa’s garden grows into a business

Elisa Monhla from Botlokwa looks after her family with a garden she created in 2017.

LIMPOPO – When she started the garden she was trying to feed her family and planted spinach, beetroot, carrots, chillies, onions and greenpeppers. To her surprise she has a hand for gardening and her garden grew into a sustainable business. She now sells vegetables to the community and she can’t keep up with the demand. “My vegetables never last in my garden because once they are ready people come to buy everything, so I can say the garden keeps me busy as I plant immediately after selling all the crops.”

She also started another garden at Soekmekaar because her yard is not big enough to plant enough vegetables to keep up with the demand.

She is grateful for her garden because it affords her the opportunity to make enough money to buy food for her family. She gets a lot of support from her community because they are the ones who buy her vegetables, she also sells her produce at places where people collect social grants.

“When you sell to people in your community, don’t inflate your prices, because those people support you and they will keep on supporting you. If you don’t have their support your business will not survive”.

Her vegetables are fresher than fresh, because she believes in manure to fertilise the soil and she waters the garden twice a day if not more, depending on the weather. Because her vegetables are always in demand she wishes that she had a bigger piece of land to plant more vegetables.
