Department to distribute food parcels to needy households in Limpopo

LIMPOPO – The MEC for Social Development Nkakareng Rakgoale will distribute 5 000 food parcels to families that have been identified by social workers and community development practitioners across the province.
Families that are in dire need and have not yet been assessed by the department’s officials are urged to call 071 609 9090, in order for the department to provide social workers to conduct an assessment and verification.

The distribution of food parcels has been prompted by the fact that many families are currently struggling to make ends meet due to the lockdown in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
“In collaboration with South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), municipalities and the Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlement and Traditional Affairs we have managed to establish 14 temporary shelters across the province, where we are accommodating about seven hundred homeless people. The food parcels were made available by different stakeholders that include businesses, NGOs and individuals who understand that there is a need for them to join hands with government in providing for the vulnerable people,” explains Rakgoale.
The donations that have been made by good Samaritans will really go a long way in augmenting the provision of food at the temporary shelters. “On behalf of the Department of Social Development, I want to take this opportunity and thank everyone who contributed to enable us to fully respond to the Covid-19 regulations that have been put in place to ensure that we curb the spread of the virus.”
She urged people to stay at home and ensure that they do not travel unnecessarily, as the movement of people has been identified as the main contributor to the spread of the coronavirus.
“ Over and above all this assistance, we have deployed teams of psychosocial support to offer necessary assistance to the infected and affected persons and their families. The team also monitors the implementation of precautionary measures by all service providers and NPOs providing social services during this period,” the MEC said.
