President visits ZCC; strengthens ties to fight Covid-19

Ramaphosa exclaimed that the courtesy visit was to express gratitude to the churches and provide an update on government's response to the pandemic.

POLOKWANE – The President, Cyril Ramaphosa today visited the St. Engenast ZCC and the ZCC for consultations on how to strengthen the relentless charge against Covid-19. The meeting took place at Zion City, Moria.

Ramaphosa declared a national state of disaster in terms of the Disaster Management Act on 15 March 2020 to respond to the Coronavirus pandemic and has been engaging with various leaders of political parties in parliament, interfaith and traditional leaders along with industries and business representatives to consolidate a national effort against the virus.

“We are here to ensure that the fight against Covid-19 is strengthened by ensuring our relations with these two churches are strengthened.” Ramaphosa exclaimed that the courtesy visit was to express gratitude to the churches and provide an update on government’s response to the pandemic.

“We also seek the advice of the church, guidance and prayers for the nation in the fight against Covid-19.”

The churches have since heeded the president’s call and postponed the annual Easter Pilgrimages for 2020, and said that together as a nation we continue to pray for healing and victory against this global pandemic. The meeting with Bishops Engenas and Barnabas Lekganyane was held as a continuation of cooperation between government and religious communities that positively influence South Africans’ to fight the spread of the coronavirus and adhere to the national disaster management regulations.

The president was accompanied by various ministers and MEC’s along with the Premier, Chupu Mathabatha.
