[WATCH] To keep the elderly safe from COVID-19, Sassa pays out pensions earlier than expected

POLOKWANE – The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) will pay out social April’s grants earlier, to older persons and persons with disabilities.
These payouts will be made on Monday and Tuesday this week, in an effort to maintain social distancing measures by reducing congestion and keep older and vulnerable people safe during the national lockdown period.
Other grant beneficiaries will be able to collect these grants on Wednesday, 1 April.

On Monday, queues were already starting to form in Landdros Mare Street by 07:00 and indeed, local residents were adhering to social distancing measures.
Sturdy chairs were made available for beneficiaries at the main Sassa building, and placed at a one-metre distance.
Most grant recipients were wearing masks and gloves.
All payments are expected to be made by 15:00 on Monday and Tuesday, according to Sassa officials.
