Public transport hours extended for Sassa beneficiaries

Grant beneficiaries can breathe a sigh of relief as the hours in which public transport operates during the lockdown has been relaxed by Transport Minister, Fikile Mbalula.

LIMPOPO – Effective tomorrow, Monday, 30 March, until Friday, 3 April, buses and taxis will be permitted to operate from 05:00 to 20:00 in order to cater to the transportation needs of society’s most vulnerable. In a statement released, Mbalula says a request was made by the Minister of Social Development, Lindiwe Zulu and various industry bodies, of which he considered and decided to amend the Public Transport Directions in order to accommodate grant beneficiaries. “The exercise of social distance by all those using public transport must be observed and enforced.  We will issue further Directions in this regard,” his statement read. Grant recipients are required to carry their Identity Documents and South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) cards when travelling on public transport, to assist law enforcement efforts.
