Traffic volumes to Limpopo increase ahead of national lockdown

The Department of Transport advises motorists to buckle up, adhere to speed limits and to be patient

LIMPOPO – Traffic volumes on the N1 northbound have increased ahead of the national lockdown and Easter holiday.

The lockdown commences at 23:59 this evening and will restrict the movement of South Africans who are not deemed as those who will provide essential services.

The Department of Transport says they expect the volumes to increase toward the afternoon and advises motorists to buckle up, adhere to speed limits and to be patient, especially at tollgates.

“Motorists are requested to have the correct amount of money upon approach to avoid congestion at the pay points.”

Traffic Count Per Vehicle at Kranskop Tollgate: Northbound to Limpopo on Thursday, 26 March:
08:00 – 633 vehicles
09:00 – 677 vehicles
10:00 –  713 vehicles

Health MEC Dr Phophi Ramathuba will continue to fight the spread of coronavirus, Covid-19 by screening travellers who  are making their way from Gauteng to Limpopo on the N1.

“A number of people have taken the opportunity of using the last day before commencement of the lockdown to travel to Limpopo to be with their families. In light of this the MEC and her team have set-up a screening and testing station on the N1 at the Mantsole Weighbridge Traffic Centre and travelers will be diverted for screening and testing,” says Health spokesperson, Neil Shikwambana.
