Sekhukhune District Municipality is ready to manage the Covid-19 threat after a high-level meeting that was attended by mayors and municipal managers of its four local municipalities and senior officials from sector departments last Thursday.
According to a media release by the municipality, the purpose of the meeting was to coordinate efforts to combat the Covid-19 outbreak. While no infection case is reported in Sekhukhune yet, the meeting expressed the importance of preparing the district for any possibility and to intensify the prevention campaign.
A district task team, comprising all municipal managers, communications managers, corporate directors, occupational health and safety officers, managers for municipal health services, hospital chief executive officers and SAPS personnel was formed.
This team that will be chaired by acting Municipal Manager of Sekhukhune District, Mpho Mofokeng will actualise the response plan. Executive Mayor Stan Ramaila will chair a district political team which includes all the local mayors.
Meanwhile, after last Thursday’s meeting, Ramaila made unannounced visits at several retail stores in Groblersdal to ascertain if they have any precautionary measures in place.
“In many instances we found that retail stores and restaurants had sanitisers at entrances, but we urged them to provide workers such as cashiers who have contact with customers and those who prepare food in restaurants with protective masks to protect themselves and others,” Ramaila was quoted to have said.
Ramaila added that officials from the Municipal Health Services would intensify inspections to ensure compliance is adhered to.
