Following engagements with the provincial government on Monday, the United African Apostolic Church have indicated that the formation has cancelled all its planned Easter activities.
The church leader, Archbishop Professor David Mureri met with the Executive Council led by Premier Stan Mathabatha to discuss issues relating to the Coronavirus following President Cyril Ramaphosa’s pronouncement that gatherings of more than 100 people were prohibited due to the spread of the epidemic.
After the meeting Mureri informed Polokwane Observer that the gathering went well and that they had assured Mathabatha that the church would join forces with Government to help fight further spead of the virus. He said they have not postponed but cancelled their planned Easter church services until the President announces that it is safe to convene such meetings.
“Now that the President has pronounced the national lockdown for 21 days, we are also sending out messages to our church leaders to halt all church activities. Our biggest gathering was planned for September while the youth conference was set for June. We have cancelled the youth church gathering and the September one will only be held if the President says it safe to do so. Church members are no longer going to meet during this period. We will utilise social media platforms and text messages to spread the word of God and encourage people to adhere to health safety measures as pronounced by government,” Mureri explained and concluded by encouraging other formations to join forces with government for the country to win the battle against the virus.
Mathabatha’s Spokesperson Kenny Mathivha confirmed the meeting and stated that the church leader had assured the Provincial Government that all their gatherings have been cancelled.
