Limpopo police condemn mob attacks and killings

This condemnation follows the recent two separate incidents of this nature that occurred in the Gilead policing area outside Mokopane.

LIMPOPO – Two separate incidents of mob justice in the Gilead policing area outside Mokopane have sparked outrage and led the Provincial Comissioner, Lt Gen Nneke Ledwaba to reiterate that those who perpetrate this type of incidents, will be dealt with harshly and without compromise.

A middle age man at Rebone RDP section in Steilloop was caught and assaulted by an angry mob who accused him of dealing drugs in the area.

Col Moatshe Ngoepe, Police Spokesperson, said in a statement that the man’s VW Polo was torched during the attack.

“Police and medical emergency services were summoned and responded accordingly.  The man was certified dead at the scene by the paramedics. The deceased was identified as 51-year-old Sydney Marakalala from Mokopane.”

In another incident, community members attacked 31-year-old Kgabo Morris Thlako on Wednesday, 18 March at around 18:00 in Uitzicht village.

They accused the man of dealing drugs in the village.

Ngoepe said the police were notified and managed to rescue the man who sustained serious injuries.

“He was taken to the local hospital for medical treatment but later succumbed to his injuries.”

Ngoepe said the police urge members of the community to not take the law into their own hands and rather notify the police about illegal activities.

No arrests have been made at this stage and anyone with information that can lead to the arrest of the suspects involved in these two incidents, may contact Lt Col Richard Boshomane at 079 894 5501, the crime stop number at 086 001 0111 or the nearest police station.

Police investigations are still continuing.
