Panic-buying: Now is the time for a veggie garden

With a lot of people panic-buying, super markets are left with empty shelves and now might be the best time to start a vegetable garden.

POLOKWANE – Along with die government’s urges for people not to unnecessarily be among other people, Review asked Gladys Gaffane, Assistant Manager at Greener Tidings Garden Centre, about how one can create a vegetable garden.

“Spinach is the fastest growing vegetable. Vegetables grow fast and quite easily. Seedlings grow faster than seeds and you have to make sure you have enough drainage for the plants. Add some gravel to the bottom of the container before you add soil.”

She also said one should use a little bit of bone meal and good potting soil when you plant vegetable seedlings.

“You can also use some 2:3:4-fertiliser on a monthly basis. But pour it in between the plants and not on the plant itself, as it will burn the plant.”

Plants such as tomatoes and cucumber, which grow tall or produce vines, will be more productive if grown in a container garden.
