Covid-19: Local churches re-map services

A recent announcement by President Cyril Ramaphosa to ban all gatherings of more than 100 people is done as a precautionary measure in trying to eliminate the spread of the Corona virus. Local churches with a large number of congregants seem to be most affected by the statement.

Potter’s House

Potter’s House has released a statement on their website stating, “In light of global precautions for the coronavirus, Covid-19, and to ensure we are adhering to the direction of our leading health and government authorities, effective immediately, all church activities, gatherings, auxiliary ministries, including Sunday services and Wednesday evenings Bible services, are postponed until further notice.” The statement added that church personnel are actively monitoring the Covid-19 developments as it relates to the health and well-being of members and the community. “We continue to have close communication with local health and government authorities. Our highest priority continues to be the spiritual and physical health and safety of our guests, staff, church members, volunteers and associates, locally and globally.” They also added that the staff were advised on proper Covid-19 recommended protocols and the importance of ensuring all common preventative precautions, such as disinfecting commonly touched items, washing hands for a minimum of 20 seconds with soap and water, and staying home if you feel ill.

Cathedral of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church

Priest Clement Selemela of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, said a letter was being circulated that detailed the measures they have put into place. “As a church that uses rituals in our worship, we have had to change the way we do a few things.” He added that the basics still apply and those who are not feeling well should stay at home. “We will release a formal letter on whether church attendance will be cancelled.”

N.G Kerk Pietersburg-Oos

Reverend Tjaart Meyer from the N.G Kerk Pietersburg-Oos says the church held a meeting on Monday evening on the measures they are going to put in place. He added that during the school holidays the church does not have an attendance of 100 or more, so they will not be cancelling or dividing the services for now: “We will however monitor the situation and if the number increases we will decide on whether to divide the groups and have two services a day or have two alternating groups each Sunday”. He adds that they are compiling leaflets on COVID-19 to hand out and educate their congregants.

Agape Christen Gemeente Polokwane

Pastor Corné van Niekerk says the Agape Christen Gemeente Polokwane has divided their services into two in order to deal with the restriction. He also added that the church usually has a decline in attendance over the school holiday.
