Commission Provincial Manager, Victor Mabhidula says the commission has noted an increase in violations of health and education.

POLOKWANE – The inaccessibility of health services, a lack of medication and services rendered by health officials to be below standard are just some of the registered violations received by the South African Human Rights Commission.

This is according to Commission Provincial Manager, Victor Mabhidula who says the commission has noted an increase in violations of health and education. Mavhidula says in cases such as these, the commission will investigate the matter by visiting the institution where the claim was lodged before the case can be heard.

“Health related cases are by a small margin the highest complains that we receive. There seems to be a deteriorating state of public health institutions.”

Next on the list is education. According to Mavhidula, there have been numerous claims of corporal punishment, insufficient teachers, lack of resources, not enough teachers and support staff and lastly parents forced to pay school fees at no-fee paying schools.

“Infrastructure is also a problem in the department. Most of the complaints also include the quality of education the learners receive because of those mentioned issues.”

Mavhidula mentions that they do have a significant number of other complaints but education and healthcare are high on the list. “We have a dedicated team of specialists who are always ready to attend to the needs of the people. Should someone feel violated they are welcome to walk into our offices for consultation.”

Mavhidula adds that even if one is not sure about the violation, the commission will still take it up. “One does not need to set up an appointment, unless the case has already been allocated to a legal officer. In this case an appointment will be made with the specific person.”
