New HOD appointed for Health department

Health MEC Dr Phophi Ramathuba has welcomed the Premier, Chupu Mathabatha’s decision to appoint Dr Thokozani Mhlongo as the Head of Department for the Department of Health.

POLOKWANE – Mhlongo was the Deputy Director General responsible for Tertiary Health Services at the department and has been acting as the department’s HOD since October 2018 and was officially appointed as the Head of Department for the Department of Health on 1 March.

Mhlongo brings an impeccable academic background and a wealth of experience acquired in the health sector. She started off as a nurse before proceeding to qualify as a physiotherapist and later as a medical doctor.

Ramathuba said the Premier could not have appointed a better candidate.

“Dr Mhlongo is a shrewd administrator who has grown within the ranks of the health system administration and strengthening. She has worked her way up into becoming a Clinical Manager, Director, Chief Director and Deputy Director General in various provinces,” Ramathuba said.

“Since her appointment as acting HOD, Dr Mhlongo has hit the ground running by ensuring that among other things, the department is stabilised financially and came up with a number of initiatives to propel the department forward in its quest to improve service delivery. The administrative support that she gives to the MEC has seen a number of Medical Specialists recruited into the province, advanced medical equipment introduced in line with the 4IR and thereby creating a conducive environment for the performance of advanced operations in our hospitals.”

Ramathuba wished Mhlongo well in her new responsibility.

“We believe that Dr Mhlongo’s abilities and experience will come handy in our effort to ensure a long and healthy life for all people in Limpopo. We wish her all the best.”
