Child among five dead in N1 collision north of Mokopane

Two others sustained minor to moderate injuries, says ER24's spokesperson, Russel Meiring.

LIMPOPO – Five people, including a child died in a two-vehicle collision on the N1 north of Mokopane on Friday afternoon, confirmed the police in a statement.

The collision, between a Dutsan sedan and a Toyota Yaris, happened at around 13:30 approximately 15km outside of Mokopane.

According to police reports it is alleged that one of the vehicle had a puncture and swerved into the oncoming lane colliding head-on with the other. The Dutsun caught fire on impact and five people including a child burned beyond recognition, explained Police Spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo.

In a earlier statement, ER24’s spokesperson, Russel Meiring said ER24 paramedics, along with other services, arrived on the scene to find two vehicles alongside the road. One of the vehicles was in flames. Once the burning vehicle had been extinguished, medics found several people still inside the vehicle. They had sustained numerous, fatal, burn wounds and were declared dead on the scene.”

He added that two others sustained minor to moderate injuries and were treated on the scene and thereafter transported to nearby hospitals for further care.

The exact cause of the collision will form part of a police investigation. Investigations to identify the deceased are still ongoing.
