Local taxi driver shot and killed during quarrel over routes

The incident happened at a local taxi rank on Wednesday

POLOKWANE – The police are looking for a person (s) responsible for the murder of 43-year-old Simon Sipho Phihlela.

Phihlela, a taxi driver was shot and killed during an altercation at the Extension 71B taxi rank in Seshego on Wednesday, 26 February.

According to reports the members of a local taxi association were fighting over the sequence of ferrying commuters on their authorized routes when a shootout ensued and the deceased was shot, says Police Spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo.

“After the shooting, the deceased’s brother took him to a local hospital where he was certified dead on arrival,” he adds.

The police were summoned and a case of murder was opened. Investigations into the incident are still ongoing and the police urges anyone with information that can lead to the arrest of the person (s) involved, to contact Col Malesela Mogale at 0714792329. ALternatively they can contact the 24-hour Crime Stop number at 0860010111 or their nearest police station.

The Provincial Police Commissioner, Genl Nneke Ledwaba has strongly condemned this incident and has instructed the police to hunt down the killers and bring them to book.
