Following the conclusion of the five week Back to School campaign conducted at 30 schools in Limpopo, the provincial Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Education would adopt Serare Junior Secondary School in Shiluvana village, Mopani area to provide constant monitoring and support to ensure improvement of the matric results at the end of the current academic year.
According to information made available to Polokwane Observer by the Office of the Chief Whip of the African National Congress in the Legislature, this after the committee established that there are social issues that have an impact on the process of teaching and learning at Serare Junior Secondary School. It was learnt that the reason for the committee to select the school for a second visit is largely because it was the worst performing school in the Mopani West District with 5% matric pass rate and this is attributable to the societal ills.
It was further reported that part of the engagements included interaction between the committee with the feeder schools. According to information, the campaign was a fact-finding mission which the Chairperson of the committee, Violet Mathye, has been leading for the past five weeks of assessing the level of readiness at schools for the 2020 academic calendar. The committee assessed a number of aspects including the functionality of schools, starting times for assembly and lessons, ablution facilities and an assortment of policy frameworks to ensure that teaching and learning proceeds without any hindrance.
Mathye was quoted to have said: “The committee made a random selection across the spectrum on various schools regardless of their performance and indications are that it is all systems go in most of them. The meeting with the parents of the Serare Junior Secondary School was to create a lasting relationship with the community and to ensure that parents become central to their children’s education.”
She reportedly said the committee will adopt the school and provide constant monitoring and support to ensure that its results also improves at the end of the year. The campaign was a successful expedition, according to Mathye.
