Limpopo learner raped on her way to attend weekend classes

The police were notified of the incident after a passerby heard the learners plea for help

LIMPOPO – The police in Magatle outside Lebowakgomo appeal to the public to help them locate a man who raped a 18-year-old Grade 12 learner on Saturday, 22 February.

It is alleged that the victim was walking through the bush along the road between Magatle and Mapatjakeng, to attend Saturday classes, when she was attacked and raped.

It is only after a passerby heard her plea for help that the police were notified and the victim was taken to a local hospital for medical treatment.

A manhunt for the rapist has since been launched and the police urge anyone with information that can lead to his arrest, to contact Det Sgt Steven Mogale at 0826251333. Alternatively they can contact the 24-hour Crime Stop number at 0860010111 or the nearest police station.

According to a statement issued by the Department of Education the victim, who is a learner at Tubake Secondary School in Zebediela, will receive the necessary counselling. Education MEC, Polly Boshielo further called for the protection of learners going to and returning from school.

“We need to collaborate to ensure that our learners are safe when going to and returning from school. Learners deserve protection wherever they are, inside the school and outside the school,” said Boshielo.

The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lt Genl Nneke Ledwaba has instructed the police to hunt down the perpetrator and bring him to book. He further urged pupils to be vigilant when walking alone in secluded areas and always have in their possession contact numbers of the nearest police station.
