Limpopo nurse pretends to be lawyer, scams car crash victim

The nurse, pretending to be a lawyer, called the victim after he was discharged and said he can assist the victim with their Road Accident Fund (RAF ) claim.

LIMPOPO – A 46-year-old nurse appeared in the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court yesterday on a charge of fraud.

According to Police Spokesperson, Motlafela Mojapelo, the man defrauded a 38-year-old accident victim of more than a R1 000 in cash.

The nurse was arrested yesterday at around 10:00 after the victim opened a case on Thursday, 20 February.

Mojapelo said it is believed that the nurse requested contact numbers of the victim who was admitted to hospital after a car crash on 10 August 2019.

The nurse, pretending to be a lawyer, called the victim after he was discharged and said he can assist the victim with their Road Accident Fund (RAF ) claim.

The ‘lawyer’  requested the victim to deposit an amount of R1 500 to continue with the process.

After several months, the victim followed up on the case but was instructed to pay more money. The victim then decided to contact the police as he became suspicious.

Police urge people who may have fallen victims to a similar scam to come forward and report the matter or contact the Crime Stop number at 086 001 0111.

The nurse was granted bail of R1 500 and will appear again on Monday, 2 March.
