Tip-off leads to the arrest of 2 women transporting explosives

The materials worth R1,2m were reportedly destined for Gauteng

LIMPOPO – Two woman found to be transporting large amounts of explosive materials were arrested by the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation team in Thohyandou on Wednesday, 12 February.

Spokesperson for the Hawks, Capt Matimba Maluleke, said the team received information about two women from Zimbabwe who were in possession of explosives destined for Gauteng. Two people who matched the descriptions given were spotted at a lodge in Thohoyandou and the team closely monitored their movements. They were arrested just as they were about to board a bus destined for Gauteng and charged with unlawful possession of explosives and contravention of the Immigration Act.

Explosives, emulsion blasting cartridges and case fuses with the estimated street value of over R1.2 million were seized during the arrest, Maluleke concluded.

The duo appeared in the Thohyandou Magistrate’s Court today and were remanded in custody until 9 March for further investigation.
