Seven suspects were expected to appear in the Groblersdal Magistrate’s Court on Monday facing charges relating to public violence following an incident at Motetema on Saturday during which the road between the two towns was barricaded.
Provincial Police Spokesperson Moatshe Ngoepe indicated that the suspects, aged between 24 and 45, are facing charges of attempted murder, public violence, tampering with essential infrastructure and malicious damage to property.
It is alleged that the suspects together with other community members went on the rampage, barricading the main road between Motetema and Groblersdal with burning tyres and stones. In the process cars were also damaged with stones and petrol bombed.
Members of the Public Order Policing Unit (Pops) swiftly responded to bring the situation under control. Pops remained in the area to monitor the situation on the weekend.
Provincial Police Commissioner Nneke Ledwaba condemned the incident where members of the community are seriously affected by this unbecoming behaviour of others. Those who continue to perpetrate similar acts will be dealt with harshly and without compromise, he warned.
