With water supply seemingly being a major crisis in most parts of the province, Premier Stan Mathabatha is anticipated to meet with the Minister of Water and Sanitation Lindiwe Sisulu in Sekhukhune tomorrow (Friday) to deliberate on water infrastructure challenges among others.
This is according to Provincial Government spokesperson Kenny Mathivha who he indicated that Mathabatha was likely to inform the public during his State of the Province Address (Sopa) planned for 27 February at the Jack Botes Hall if a water disaster should be declared in Limpopo. He went on to highlight that although most parts of the province are experiencing water supply challenges, Vhembe district was the least affected as compared to other districts.
The latest information provided by the Department of Water and Sanitation revealed that Dap Naude Dam was at 64,1% this week while Ebenezer Dam stood at 21,2%. The Flag Boshielo, Hans Merensky and Magoebaskloof Dams exceeded the 100% mark as the levels reached 100,9%, 102,7% and 102,1% respectively.
The reservoir levels report issued by Polokwane Municipality on Monday highlighted that the Potgieter Street reservoir was at 0%, while the three reservoirs at Krugersburg were at 28%, 17% and 22% respectively.
The Seshego reservoir stood at 5% while pumping from the Olifantspoort plant and Ebenezer Dam was at 95 l/sec and 205 l/sec respectively.
It was learnt that Stanford Lake has burst its banks leaving the bridge and jetty submerged and water running into Ebenezer Dam following 200 mm received in three days. By the time of going to print, the latest reservoir indicators were still being awaited.
