The Limpopo High Court on Friday sentenced Kamogelo Collins Mashabela (19) to life imprisonment plus an additional 20 years after he was convicted on charges of murder, attempted murder and arson following an incident which resulted in the death of a two-year-old baby on 5 March last year.
Provincial Police Spokesperson Moatshe
Ngoepe confirmed the sentencing and indicated that the baby’s death followed a heated argument between Mashabela and the mother of the baby at her house at Ga-Mashabela in the Masemola Policing area outside Lebowakgomo.
The mother managed to escape the attack from Mashabela with only minor injuries but her baby later succumbed to injuries sustained when Mashabela set the house on fire.
Police reacted quickly and found the house on fire on their arrival on the scene. The baby was rescued but later died in hospital, according to Ngoepe.
The case was assigned to detective Frank Makola who immediately started with investigations and the manhunt for the suspect until he was arrested within days after the incident.
Provincial Police Commissioner Nneke Ledwaba has complimented the investigating officer on a job well done.
