3 smugglers nabbed with over R14m worth of illicit goods at Limpopo border post

The goods were found during a routine search

LIMPOPO – The police have arrested three people for attempting to smuggle illicit goods worth more than R14 million into the country this week.

This after two trucks were intercepted at the Groblersbrug border post at around 21:50 on Tuesday, 11 February.

Police Spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo, says upon entry into South Africa and drivers of the trucks were directed to the search bay for a routine search. It was during this search that the officials discovered illicit creams and cigarettes worth R14,5 million packaged in boxes.

The three accused, aged between 39 and 47 were arrested and the illicit goods confiscated.

The confiscated items include 521 boxes containing various skin lightening creams (Betasol, Diproson, Epiderm, Movate, Lemonvate and Extra Clear), valued at R13 518 960.00 and 30 cartoons of Pacific Blue cigarettes valued at R4 473.19.

Two Scania trucks valued at around R1.5 million were also confiscated.

The accused will appear in the Phalala Magistrate’s Court soon.

The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lt Genl Nneke Ledwaba commended the members for their hard work and vigilance which ensured that the above mentioned illicit goods did not find their way into the South African markets.
