Broken-down truck the reason for garbage pile up, says muni

Residents feel the waste poses a danger to their children.

POLOKWANE – Residents from Ga-Rena in Ladanna are complaining about waste that has not been removed by the Polokwane Municipality’s waste management system. The residents say the waste poses a danger to their children because it is not monitored and the children might go and play on the garbage pile and get injured by sharp objects.

They say the waste also poses a health risk because the children might eat something from the garbage that is poisonous or a danger to their health. Residents told Review that it has been three weeks since the municipality last came to fetch the waste and garbage. They are not only worried about their children’s health risk but also that the waste will be blown by the wind and end up next to their flats.

The residents tried to contact the municipality and were not notified that the reason the truck did not come to collect the waste is because the truck broke down.

Polokwane Municipality Spokesperson, Matshidiso Mothapo confirmed that waste at Ga-Rena residence and surrounding residential areas were not collected on Monday, because the truck had a break down on route.

“The problem was resolved yesterday (Tuesday) and the team are attending to the backlog.”

Residents who experience any problems regarding waste or garbage removal can contact the municipality at (015) 290 2366/2367.
