Tips to stretch your Rand if you are a student

Budgeting is a skill which can help you stretch your finances, especially when you are at varsity. Financial adviser, Marothi Letsoalo shared how one should handle their finances at varsity level.

POLOKWANE – He explained that students will have to have an honest look at their budget and prioritise accommodation. “Students should take how much their accommodation will be and have a checklist of things that will help you save up. Consider how far it is from school and what are the basics that comes with it. If you are going to have to travel, how much will it cost you? Does it come with a bed, internet access as well as security,” he said.

Letsoalo urged students to avoid getting the most expensive phones and laptops but rather something they are able to maintain which is within their price range.

“Stay away from wants as you can live without it. Draw up a budget, which will give you a clear idea of what your needs are and how much you have to work with. If you have a roommate, it helps to work together to get through the month. Compile a grocery list and try to buy in bulk because it is cheaper that way. When you buy groceries, rather buy two days after month end because it is cheaper. On pay days, things cost more because they know that you just want to buy what you need and leave,” he explained.

The same applies for data, buy in bulk because it is cheaper than constantly buying throughout the month. He also advised starting a small business to substitute the money you get.

“Baking is something which you can do after hours once you know all your school work is complete,” he said.

Letsoalo says it is important for students to research their chosen field of study and see how employable they will be after they graduate. “Check the demand for the skills you gain – it is pointless to study something that will not get you employed at the end of the day. Have a target, set a goal and stick to it in terms of academic. If the course is four years, let it be four years.”

Something else that adds unnecessary pressure is the excitement of a new environment and the temptations that come with having freedom. “Remain true to yourself and avoid creating situations where you have to keep up appearances and pretend to have money which you do not,” he said.
