Resident outcry: Sewerage spills and awful smells

Affected households have been reporting the matter to the municipality's water section in Louis Trichardt since November

LIMPOPO – Residents of Tshikota township continue to endure the persistent sewerage spills from open manholes and ablution pipelines in their homes.

There are apparently blockages in two manholes in the street, of which repairs are the duty of the Vhembe District Municipality.

David Mulaudzi says residents have been reporting the matter to the municipality without getting any help.

Affected households have been reporting the matter to the municipality’s water section in Louis Trichardt since November, they say, but little has come of their complaints.

“We are living with k*k in our own house because of a problem we are not allowed to fix,” said a resident, Chris Tshivule.

Sewage runs down the street from the blocked manhole system.

“It seems like the main sewage line is blocked, and this sends all the sewerage back into our yard and house.”

He added that he had spotted children playing around the sewer. “They play there barefooted, and I have warned them that they could catch diseases”.

Another affected resident who lives near Tshivule, David Mulaudzi, said the situation was appalling since the sewer had exposed them to various diseases.

“Our municipality should learn to respond to our reports on time. We have been experiencing this problem since last year. We had a festive season that we couldn’t even enjoy with a braai, since the odour from the overflowing sewage is too much to bear.”

The Spokesperson for Vhembe District Municipality, Matodzi Ralushai told CV he had forwarded the complaint to the technical section and that he would comment once he receives feedback.
