Open hole poses threat to residents’ safety

The hole is not visible and is not marked

POLOKWANE – A deep drainage hole is proving to be a safety hazard to residents in Westenburg and has been open for three weeks.

A resident, Lucille Buys says the hole in Lemur Street did show signs of being tampered with beforehand, but it caved in after a truck drove over it.

She added that the municipality’s maintenance department was immediately contacted and the hole reported, but nothing has been done since.

Westenburg resident, Lucille Buys.

“This hole is dangerous because it is not visible when walking past and it is not marked.

“Both children and adults have almost fallen into it and it becomes worse at night as there are no street lights in the area,” she told BONUS.

Lucille says she flagged down a municipal truck on Friday, 24 January.

“I showed the workers the hole and they promised to be back the same day to repair it but they haven’t returned.

“This hole is problematic because children play around it and pretend to push each other in.

“It is not possible to constantly have someone watching the hole and we don’t want someone to suffer because of negligence by the municipality.”

Municipal Spokesperson, Thipa Selala said he was following up the matter.
