DA pleads with MEC to take action against Principal of Lekgolo Primary School

Two learners were killed on 22 January and the incident reportedly happened outside of the school premises during school hours.

LIMPOPO – The Democratic Alliance (DA) has called on the MEC for Education, Polly Boshielo to take action against the Principal of Lekgolo Primary School after it was revealed that the accident happened outside of the school premises during school hours.

Sello Fortunate Mohale (7) and Rethabile Nakana (5), were killed when a wall collapsed on top of them after a truck, delivering food as part of the school feeding scheme, crashed into it. Two others were injured and have since been discharged from hospital.

Jacques Smalle, DA Limpopo Spokesperson on Education says this incident could have been avoided as it is the responsibility of the principal of the school to ensure the safety of learners and that learners are supervised during school hours. “The failure to do so by the principal is tantamount to negligence and he together with all those responsible, as a result of failure to comply with school safety policy or negligence for this tragic incident, must be held accountable. We cannot jeopardise the safety and lives of our learners in our schools.”

Smalle adds that vigilance by educators and adherence to school safety policies must be prioritised to ensure learner safety and calls on Boshielo to ensure that the investigation into the circumstances around the learner’s death is made public.
