Five passengers and the driver were killed in a bus accident on the R81 road next to Ga-Sekgopo on Sunday morning after the driver is alleged to have lost control over the vehicle which then rolled over. A further 20 people were injured and taken to hospitals in Kgapane, Mankweng and Polokwane for medical treatment. Reports suggest that the bus was transporting members and supporters to the ANC’s 108th anniversary celebrations which took place at Mohlabaneng village in Bolobedu.

Ledet MEC, Thabo Mokone confirmed in a statement that the bus had undergone maintenance prior to the trip and had been cleared to be roadworthy.

“The department expects approximately 75 new buses by the end of April with the possibility of hiring at least an additional 100 buses for the benefit of commuters. Details on the arrival of the new buses will be announced in due-course,” said Mokone.

The Transport and Community Safety MEC, Dickson Masemola and Social Development MEC, Nkakareng Rakgoale earlier sent their condolences to the families. Social workers have since been dispatched to provide psychosocial support to the survivors, bereaved families and other affected parties.
