Beautician Claudia knows the tricks of the beauty trade

Claudia Dube says most people do not know the amount of hard work and admin that goes into being a technician and that you can get further if you are business-minded

POLOKWANE – “Never let anyone tell you that being part of the beauty industry is not a career,” are the words that nail technician, Claudia Dube lives by.

She says most people do not know the amount of hard work and admin that goes into being a technician and that you can get further if you are business-minded. Claudia told BONUS that she has always loved beauty and wanted to explore the industry as a whole.

Having worked at a few salons in Polokwane, she ventured out on her own in 2019 and now works independently at DL Hair and Beauty Salon in Grobler Street. “I did not take my talent seriously until my aunt, Alexia, enrolled me into beauty school and the rest is history. I love that my craft makes women feel beautiful,” she added.

Originally from Eldorado Park in Johannesburg, Claudia is married to Litzen and has a son, Nathaniel. After she matriculated in 2009, Claudia furthered her studies as a beauty specialist at Success International Hair and Beauty Academy in Gauteng where she completed the course in 2011.

“Nails were not included in my course, only health and skin-care. I am therefore self-trained. I decided to learn the trade as it is usually part of the salon ‘package’ and in addition to that, I also do tips, gel nails and pedicures,” she added. She explained that nails have always been a mystery to her but that it challenges her at the same time.

Claudia used to work in a well-known bank as a human resource administrator as well as a glass packer in a local store before she ventured into the beauty industry. “I had to work my way up as motivation for my son. We as parents need to show our children that when it comes to your career, it is not best to get stuck in one place but rather to keep moving and excelling until you succeed,” she said.

Claudia says juggling work and family can be a challenge as she has to work late at times and still needs to do chores at home but she says those are sacrifices mothers have to make. “I have a very supportive husband who is also my mentor and biggest fan,” she added.

She said that it is better to do something that you love rather than something you hate and stay miserable forever. “One thing I love most about what I do is seeing my clients happy and leave the salon with good energy.”
