Mechatronics beckon Lim’s top science matriculant

Lutendo Mulaisi ascribes his success to pure commitment and hard work

LIMPOPO – Passion and commitment is what was needed for success.

These were the words spoken by Lutendo Mulaisi, who was recently announced as the top learner in physical sciences in the National Senior Certificate Examination.Mulaisi, who matriculated from Thengwe High School, said he has enjoyed the subject since his early grades.

He hails from Khubvi village and was among the 33 learners who last week were invited to a meet-and-greet breakfast with the Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga, which was held in Midrand.”I was overwhelmed when my name was announced. Although it came unexpected, I knew I performed well, but little did I know I would be among the top achievers.”

He ascribes his success to pure commitment and hard work.

“You have to work at it every single day. I also assisted other learners to understand scientific concepts. This in turn, helped me,” he told CV. He explained that his high school journey was tough at first.

“In the lower grades, I struggled in subjects such as economics and management sciences, creative arts and Tshivenda. Physical science was my best subject and I seldom scored lower than 80%.”

His advice is that learners should try to grasp concepts rather than simply striving for big things, “because understanding beats knowledge any day”. He plans to study mechatronics at the University of Cape Town this year. “I believe I can play an important role in the development of technology, not only in South Africa, but in the whole world. I have always loved engineering.”
