‘Donating adds more meaning to your life’ – TMF founder

POLOKWANE – Founder of Timothy Mootane Foundation (TMF) charity events and youth organisation, Potego Mootane believes helping others feel good through a donation is a wise and polite decision to make as an individual. TMF recently hosted their first charity event, Christmas Lunch, for orphans and children from disadvantage homes. They also visit schools with their sanitary towel drive.

“Our main goal as an organisation is to eradicate socio-economic issues in our communities around Limpopo. When you donate to a charity which is important to you, you not only help them continue their vital work, but you also improve your emotional well-being. It is a win-win situation,” he said.

He explained that donating is a selfless act and that one should do it out of the bottom of their heart and that no one should force them. “One of the major positive effects of donating to charity; be it clothes, money, food or toys, is simply feeling good about giving. Being able to give back to those in need helps you achieve a greater sense of personal satisfaction and growth. It feels good to help others and remember when you donate. Do not expect to get something in return because then it is no longer a donation and you will instead be doing it for publicity or for the wrong reasons,” he advised.

He explained that when one donates at shelters, they create opportunities to meet new people who believe in the same causes that inspire them. “Making a real impact can infuse your everyday life with more meaning and if you have been stuck in a rut, whether personally or professionally, sometimes the simple act of donating can do the trick and reinvigorate your life,” he added.

Potego said that when you let your friends and family know of your charitable donations, they may find themselves more motivated to undertake their own efforts to give. “It takes a village to address issues such as world poverty, scientific advancement and early-childhood education. Stoking passions in the folks around you is a very positive and tangible effect of your own giving. You do not need a million Rand to make a difference in someone’s life, all you need to do is take anything you think they might need at these specific shelters and you never know, it might make a difference and go a long way,” he advised.

Potego said he hopes that the foundation will garner support and partner with influential people in their communities to help turn things around for the betterment of their societies.
