Almost R1 million in stolen property confiscated on R101 outside Polokwane

The occupants could not produce receipts for the items nor could they disclose the origin of the items and were arrested

POLOKWANE – Six people were arrested on the scene, three of which have since been released.

The trio, who were travelling in a Toyota Quantum with three others, were arrested at the weighbridge on the R101 on Monday at around 15:30 during an intelligence driven operation conducted by members attached to the Port of Entry, the Westenburg Crime Intelligence Unit and a local tracker company.

Police Spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo says it is reported that police received information about the said vehicle, carrying six occupants, which was travelling from the Eastern Cape to Zimbabwe. The vehicle was spotted along the R101 road while refuelling at a petrol station and was directed to the nearby weigh bridge to be searched.

During the search, the police found 207 brand new cellphones, five tower batteries, three solar panels and two laptops concealed inside a trailer with luggage. The goods are estimated to be around the value of R900 000.

The occupants could not produce receipts for the items nor could they disclose the origin of the items and were arrested on charges of possession of suspected stolen property. The vehicle and trailer were also confiscated.

Three of the arrested people have since been released as they could not be linked to the stolen items, says Mojapelo. The driver, his assistant and one passenger remain in custody as police investigation continues.

The three people found to be in possession of suspected stolen property with almost R1 million will appear in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court soon, says the police.
