Bonus, Leigh helps unite Cruiser with family

Cruiser the Scottish Terrier who went missing after an incident on the N1 near Mokopane on 2 January, was found and returned to his former owners' brother. This after Leigh Michaels, a Westenburg resident, happened to see the article in Bonus last week.

POLOKWANE – “Words can never express my appreciation and gratitude,” said Niccy Pozzan, sister of Angela Pozzan who was killed in the incident near Mokopane. “I feel as if we got a piece of my sister back.”

Cruiser went missing after an incident which claimed the lives of Pozzan as well as her friend, Jacques de Jager and the two-year-old Markus Velthuyzen.

Three dogs were in the vehicle with the family members, on their way home after spending some days together on a family farm near Waterpoort. One, a Black Scottish Terrier named Pancake who belonged to the deceased Angela, was picked up and later retrieved from a family in Pretoria. Pancake is with Niccy. A Jack Russell had to be euthanised as his back was broken during the incident. Cruiser however, who belonged to Jacques, was missing and the family tried desperately and through whatever means and platform to find him again.

Leigh Michaels, a Westenburg resident, happened to see the article in Bonus last week. “I was deeply touched by the sad story.”

He and a friend were driving on the N1 when his car broke down at the Zebetiela tollgate later the day. This was when he noticed the little Scottish Terrier running alongside the road. He asked his friend to help catch the dog and they fed it and gave it water they had in the car. They were however held up with the broken-down vehicle until around 21:00.

“I went to the police station upon my return to Westenburg. They had a BONUS there and we could determine that this was indeed the dog the article was about. We phoned the number published in the article and we got hold of the sister of the deceased woman, Jacques’ girlfriend, and could assure her that Cruiser was found.

She is from Gauteng but had family in Polokwane who came to collect Cruiser. They wanted to give us some money, but I refused. I was glad that I could play a role in reuniting the dog with the family.”

Cruiser found a loving new home with Taks de Jager, brother of Jacques and his wife, Nerina in Rustenburg.
