Winds of change for Mogalakwena Municipality

An intervention team is now working in full swing with the Mogalakwena Municipality to ensure that council meets national requirements, service deliver y improves and that the municipality is eventually restored to its full capacity.

MOKOPANE – Mogalakwena was placed under administration in December last year, as announced by MEC Basikopo Makamu.Molebatsi Masedi, Head of the Communications Department of Limpopo’s Co-Operative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (CoGHSTA), told Bosveld that there are three ways in which there can be intervened, but the preferred option for this municipality is the appointment of an intervention team. Council will thus not be dissolved nor will Mayor, Andrina Matsemela vacate her position, but rather be assisted and firmly monitored.

Frans Boshiela, who was appointed as the head of the team, was introduced to council during a closed meeting that was held on Friday, 17 January. The team consists of a variety of professionals that will assist with municipal finances, supply chain specialists, human resource specialists, information technology as well as legal and labour relations specialist.Makamu says Boshielo is experienced in the local sphere of government and administration.

“He worked as the Deputy City Manager of the City of Tshwane where he was responsible for the governance and support services and operations and service deliver y. It is therefore my firm belief and conviction that his experience will go a long way in addressing the challenges that the municipality is facing.” Boshielo will report back to Makamu on the status of the municipality monthly, whereafter the MEC will report to the National Executive Council.

The progress of the municipality will be monitored for the next 12 months. Further steps will be taken should the team find it necessary. The intervention team, says Masedi, will have the full support of the Provincial Government and resources will be available at all times to restore the municipality’s constitution as well as legal processes.
