Sarel Nong set to summit the Andes

Sarel Nong says the main idea behind the expedition is to raise money to buy sanitary towels for underprivileged young girls

POLOKWANE – If Mount Everest was not enough, Sarel Nong will next take on the Aconcagua Cordillera of the Andes mountain range in Argentina during the Aconcagua expedition which starts on Saturday, 18 January. According to Wikipedia, the Aconcagua is a mountain in the Cordillera of the Andes mountain range in Mendoza, Argentina. The range is the highest mountain outside of Asia and the highest in both the southern and western hemispheres with a summit elevation of just under 7 000 metres.

Nong departed on Wednesday and will partake in the eight-day expedition alongside a group of three climbers; Sibusiso Vilane, Gerry Elsdon (former Miss South Africa) and Dr Mabule Mothapo. He told Bonus that the main idea of the expedition is to raise money to buy sanitary towels for underprivileged young girls.

“Adolescence is a crucial stage in life and one that remains challenging for most girls because of its physical and psychological changes. We have noticed that when girls menstruate, they skip school due to lack of sanitary towels and use unsavoury methods when at home, which leads to infection. The main aim is to help girls understand their power as women and strive to grow their minds while promoting the importance of education, healthy living, entrepreneurship and goal setting,” he said.

With a love of hiking which started in 2005, Nong successfully sumitted Kilimanjaro in 2017 as part of the #Trek4Mandela campaign and in 2018, successfully made it to the summit of Mount Everest.
