Vhembe to give deserving matriculants a ‘helping hand’

"We cannot look to the sidelines when our learners perform but can't progress" - Vhembe Mayor, Dowelani Nenguda

LIMPOPO – “We don’t want to see hardworking Gr 12’s linger around the streets without furthering their studies.”

For this purpose, R3,5 million has been set aside to assist achievers from poor backgrounds who are serious about education to further their studies, according to the Vhembe Mayor, Dowelani Nenguda.

Nenguda said that as the district municipality, they encourage learners to take education seriously.

He was joined by Thovhele Kennedy Midiyavhathu Tshivhase, senior district managers in the Vhembe Department of Education and circuit managers, when he addressed 26 Vhembe matriculants from the class of 2019 on their marks.

The function was held at Nandoni River View on Friday.

According to Nenguda, education is a societal responsibility.

“We cannot look to the sidelines when our learners perform but can’t progress. We owe them a helping hand.”

Vhembe East District Director, Dr Gerson Rambiyana, lauded the group, saying they had made the district proud.

“We want you to go and make a positive impact in your journey to tertiary education. Gr 12 in itself is not a qualification, but rather a passport to the qualification of your choice.”

Tshivhase said as one of the traditional leaders in Venda, learners should pursue education in their quest to fight poverty and unemployment.

“We have also, through the Tshivhase Development Trust, injected some funds to be used by top learners on their journey to tertiary education.”

Limpopo’s top 2019 matriculant, Mutshidzi Ganyane from Patrick Ramaano Secondary in Nzhelele said it was hard work that put her at the top.
