POLOKWANE – An off-the-shoulder dress or top is fashionable but becomes somewhat of a nuisance when you have to constantly pull at the neckline to keep it in place.
Fashion stylist, Bruce Nobela says of the clothing items in a woman’s closet, the off-the-shoulder tops and dresses are the most tricky to wear. “I often get female clients who phone me or visit my boutique in Ivy Park, asking for advice on how to keep their off-the-shoulder tops and dresses in place. I give all of them the same advice… these necklines can be frustrating but all you need is two small items to keep the clothing in place; safety pins and hair ties.”
By using hair ties and safety pins you can keep the top exactly where you want it, slightly under the armpit and off the shoulder, because that’s where an off-the-shoulder-top has to be. “Whether you are reaching for something in your bag or lifting your arms for something from the top shelf, this method will keep the shirt or dress off the shoulder,” he says.

Take two hair ties (preferably softer hair ties, ideally without the metal fastener, for more comfort), and the four safety pins. Loop one hair tie through two safety pins. Then secure a second safety pin on the other side of the hair tie. It will look a bit like a ‘bungee cord’ with safety pins on the outside and elastic in the middle.
Fasten one safety pin to the inside elastic or seam of the shirt, so it won’t show from the outside, right at the front of your armpit.
Attach the second safety pin to the back. Repeat on both sides the shirt.
“Use this method and you would not have to bother tugging on the neckline again. You will have an off-the-shoulder-top or dress that won’t fall off every second, no matter what you do or how you move your arms,” he concludes.
