EFF urges Education MEC to merge schools with 0% pass rate

The provincial EFF Chairperson, Jossey Buthane has urged the Department of Education to fast-track action against the 0% pass rate schools.

LIMPOPO – This, after nine schools in the province obtained a 0% pass rate in the 2019 Senior Certificate examinations.

Five of these schools are situated in Sekhukhune, two in the Capricorn district and another two in the Waterberg districts.

Buthane told CV that the 0% pass rate schools should be closed and merged.

“Failing to do so will see our department continuing to struggle.

“Education is a societal issue which needs attention from everyone including all the political parties. It is crucial that as political parties we all come in front and play our roles in education as to ensure we become a better province,” he said.

Buthane said producing a 100% pass rate is achieved through teachers’ dedication to their duties, and that action should also be taken against learners “who think they own the schools”.

“We are aware of learners who threaten their peers and teachers. Action will be taken against them,” he said.

He said community services strikes should not involve their schools.

“It worries us to see our communities burning and shutting down our schools during strikes as this contributes to poor performance,” he said.

The EFF welcomed the provincial results.

“The results indeed show that the current MEC has vision.”

He urged the community and teachers to work with the Department of Education for better results.

“We encourage those who did not make it to not give up but continue working hard because the future is bright,” he said.
