Transport and Community Safety dept calls for justice related to gangsterism

The MEC and Provincial Police Commissioner will engage with the residents following the torching of property on Sunday.

POLOKWANE – The Limpopo MEC of Transport and Community Safety, Dickson Masemola has called for the police to ensure that justice is served and that any mushrooming gangsterism in Seshego is thwarted.

This follows after the recent death on 19-year-old Thoriso Kgomo on New Year’s Evening. Kgomo from Luthuli Park was stabbed to death on 1 January in Seshego zone 3 and a 17-year old suspect has since been arrested and appeared in the Seshego Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday. He was remanded in custody until his next court appearance on 30 January for a formal bail application.

Video footage, sent by the arrested teenager, has recently surfaced on social media and the South African Youth Council (SAYC) called on the Department of Transport and Safety to investigate.

According to Joel Seabi, Spokesperson for the MEC, the police have arrested three suspects (of which one is the 17-year-old) for various counts which include assault GBH, rape and for the recent murder of Kgomo.

The statement released by Seabi on Friday, 10 January says that the police have assured the MEC that “an intensive investigation is underway to establish facts around video clips that have surfaced and caused an uproar, showing the suspect seemingly recording himself from custody”.

In conclusion, the MEC calls on Seshego residents to work with the police, the department, civil society organisations such as CPFs and interested stakeholders, to fight any act of crime.

Meanwhile, the Transport and Community Safety MEC in Limpopo, Namane Dickson Masemola has condemned the crimes and has urged the police, community and stakeholders to work  together to fight crime in the area.
