Sophie Maringa Kubayi (62) and her two sons Sergie Hlungwani (35) and Musa Loverboy Hlungwani (43) were expected to appear in the Tiyani Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday for a formal bail application following their arrest on 31 December for allegedly killing their husband and father Samson Hlungwani (66) after they reportedly accused him of witchcraft.
According to Provincial Police Communications Head Motlafela Mojapelo the incident took place at Tiyani Village in the Hlanganani Policing area outside Giyani.
It is alleged that the victim was accused of witchcraft by his wife and children subsequently attacking him and strangling him to death inside one of the rooms of their house. This after one of the sons allegedly complained that his father bewitched him as every time he married a woman she didn’t stay long, according to Mojapelo.
The Police reacted to a report about the incident and on arrival found the deceased inside the room.
Provincial Police Commissioner Nneke Ledwaba has condemned the incident and has warned community members to desist from accusing other people of practising witchcraft and then killing them.
