[TAKE NOTE] Residents vow to shutdown Mookgophong

Residents are unhappy about the gangsterism, general crime and murders in the townships

LIMPOPO – No shop will be open in Mookgophong on Wednesday, 8 January, warns the Community Developmental Forum. This is according to a notification, stamped and signed by the police station commander which was circulated on Tuesday, 7 January.

In the notification it states that the town will be completely shutdown due to protest action following the murder of two local residents in November 2019.

The accused are set to appear in the Mookgophong Magistrate’s Court today.

Marlene van Staden, Mayor of Mookgopong/Modimolle confirmed the protest action and says the march is as result of the residents that are unhappy about the gangsterism, general crime and murders in the townships.

Van Staden urges residents to remain calm, not to instigate violence and to respect private as well as state property. She also assures locals that police will be monitoring the situation.

Reports have since surfaced of tyres being burnt on the R519.
