Operations at Polokwane Municipality to resume tomorrow

Workers of the municipality as well as the community were refused access to buildings by a group of protesters who blocked the entrance on Tuesday, 7 January.

POLOKWANE – The Spokesperson for the Polokwane Municipality, Thipa Selala has notified the public that the municipal offices will be accessible from tomorrow, 9 January to render services.

This after protest action outside the Civic Centre resulted in all municipal operations and services being disrupted.

Workers of the municipality as well as the community were refused access to buildings by a group of protesters who blocked the entrance on Tuesday, 7 January.

“As a result, the municipality was unable to render much needed services to the residents of Polokwane,” he explained.

Selala said that the municipality has obtained a court order from the High Court of South Africa against the protesters who have been intimidating municipal employees and the community.

The court order prevents the protesters from:
• unlawfully occupying and interrupting the services at the municipal buildings;
• interrupting municipal services at the Rates Halls;
• interrupting, threatening and preventing municipal officials from providing services
to community members;
• holding a sit-down at the municipal buildings without municipal consent; and
• engaging in any other unlawful interruption of municipal services, amongst others.

“The court order gives permission to members of the South African Police Service and
Polokwane Municipal Law Enforcement to arrest any individual who, despite knowledge
of the order, persists in any unlawful conduct,” Selala concluded.
