Review’s day one survival guide for teachers

Tears usually flow on the first day of school and surprisingly, it is not only the learners.

POLOKWANE – The first day of school is usually a daunting day for learners, especially learners going to a new school or Gr 1 learners. Tears might run over little cheeks and somewhere, someone might get lost.

This is however not only an experience limited to learners on the first day. Teachers can experience this as well, especially those who recently completed school or university to start their first job ever. Starting out at a new job is not one of the easiest things, but starting on the first day at a school can turn into a nightmare.

Review spoke to teachers at Piet Hugo Primary to get some survival tips for the first day at a new school.

Christelle Barnard: Plan well ahead and be prepared for absolutely anything.
Jeridah Manamela: Breath in and out. Communicate with your colleagues and be kind, good and smile. Leave your worries at home.
Lynda Botha: Have a sense of humour and remember to take your vitamins.
Chinyere Oriako: Be calm, focus and try to observe the learners. Be friendly and most of all, be yourself.
