Easy steps to motivate your unmotivated child

Review spoke to Lizani Muller from Edublox to get tips to motivate an uninspired child

POLOKWANE – You wake up one morning to find your seven-year-old child slow to get out of bed and very lazy. This is not typical of your child who usually jumps out of bed, gets dressed, brushes his/her teeth and is then ready for school.

Review spoke to Lizani Muller from Edublox to get tips to motivate an uninspired child:

• Children often lack inspiration because they struggle at school.

“I often hear parents say: ‘My child is just lazy’. What we have to understand is that if a child struggles to read or write, they will do anything to hide from the fact that they are struggling and even act as if they are not interested. This is actually a cry for help. Seek professional help to help your child to overcome his/her learning difficulties.”

• Help your child to set realistic goals, write it down and put it where you can see it every day.

“When your child feels uninspired, tell him to remember his goals and what needs to be done to achieve these goals.”

• Celebrate even the smallest achievements with your child.

“If your child wanted to improve his average in English by 15% but only improved by 5%, celebrate it because it is already 5% closer to the goal.”

• Show your child that you are interested in their schoolwork and achievements.

“Spend time with them and ask questions about their schoolwork and studies.”

• Believe in your children and they will believe in themselves too.
