NYE N1 accident victims identified

Four people died on the scene and the fifth was taken to a nearby hospital and later succumbed to injuries sustained.

LIMPOPO – Five people who died in the N1 accident south of Polokwane on New Years Eve have been identified, said the police.

The collision between a petrol tanker and a sedan happened about 5km from The Ranch Resort between Polokwane and Mokopane on Tuesday evening at around 20:30.

The driver of the tanker sustained burn injuries after the tanker caught fire. He was taken to hospital for medical treatment.

The deceased have since been identifed as Lodwick Malapane (31) from gaModjadji; Revolt Baloyi (31) from Muyexe, Giyani;  Harry Mashimbyi (23) and Themba Mashimbyi (27) both from Xikukwane, Giyani and Happy Makhubela (27) from Jim village, Giyani, said Police Spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo.

Police investigations into the cause of the accident still continue.
