Two dead and three injured in tragic N1 collision near Mokopane

The injured includes a six-year child and two adults

MOKOPANE – A case of culpable homicide is being investigated following a collision where two people died and three others were injured on the N1 road south of Mokopane earlier today.

The incident happened at around 10:40 between a Toyota Land Cruiser towing a trailer and a Toyota Yaris, both reportedly travelling from north to south.

According to police reports the driver of the Land Cruiser allegedly lost control of the vehicle causing it to overturned and in the process, the trailer detached and collided with the vehicle coming from the rear, the Yaris.

Two occupants from the Land Cruiser, including the driver died on the scene and three others including a six-year-old child sustained injuries and were taken to hospital. A sixth occupant from the Land Cruiser, a toddler was not injured, said Police Spokesperson, Motlafela Mojapelo.

The six-year-old child has reportedly passed away, but this is yet to be confirmed by the police.

All three occupants from the Yaris were also not injured, he added.

The cause of the accident will be determined by the ongoing police investigations.

All lanes of the N1 had to be temporarily closed pending the conclusion of police investigations on the scene and the removal of the wreckage from the road. The road has since been cleared and is now open for traffic.
