The tale behind the Scorpion Kings’ album cover

You have heard the hits and you are familiar with the scorpion on the cover, now, meet the man behind DJ Maphorisa and Kabza De Small 's The Return of Scorpion Kings album cover design.

POLOKWANE –  Johnny Tuba (30), who manages artists and builds brands, says the cover was created at the last minute after he saw a tweet by Maphorisa.

“I spoke to a friend about one of their new releases and he told me that they were releasing another album and that I should check on Twitter. Maphorisa had tweeted that he needs an album cover.

“This was at 21:00 and I checked it out, I saw other people had sent their cover designs but Maphorisa had not chosen one,” he said.

Johnny decided to design something on the spot and tweeted it, and people responded to it.

“It feels good to have my work out there and get recognition. What I like about the cover is that it is something which was created at the last minute and it trended,” he said.

The creative is the owner of Logic World Print and Media who shared that he is a born creative and creating concepts is a part of him.

He studied multimedia graphic design and is forging his path in the creative space.

Johnny started to work before he graduated as a junior designer and he resigned to focus on building his business in branding, graphic design, web development and concept design.

“The first year after resigning was hectic. Financial challenges and trying to sustain a business without receiving anything was a major hurdle, and finding balance when money does come in, to not sustain yourself but rather sustain the business,” he said.

He emphasises that he is not a graphic designer but a brand psychologist.

“I am like a doctor, you come to me with the problem, I look at the diagnosis and give a prescription. My business is mainly focused on brand development and has to do with graphic design. There are strategies in place to get the whole package together.”
